Schools across the Simcoe County District School Board are making environmental learning and responsibility a priority.

Many of them had their efforts recognized by Ontario EcoSchools.

44 elementary and secondary schools achieved certification yesterday.

That is double the amount certified last year.

25 schools received a gold level certification, 13 were recognized with a silver level and 6 received the bronze level.

4 local schools, Cookstown Central Public School, Innisfil Central Public School in Churchill, Nantyr Shores Secondary School in Alcona and the Simcoe Alternative Secondary School in Bradford, were recipients.

Ontario EcoSchools status is obtained by implementing environmental initiatives, including recycling programs, waste-free lunches, energy conservation programs and school ground greening projects.
